Blount Mansion Centennial Anniversary: Women of the Progressive Era in Appalachia
Thursday, May 14, 2026 • 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Emma Patterson, a senior at the University of Tennessee, will speak on “Women of the Progressive Era in Appalachia” as a part of the Centennial Celebration. Her honors thesis focuses on the nature of women’s reform at the turn of the century through the life of Helen Dingman, with information about Mary Boyce Temple. Dingman, a mountain missionary, and Temple, a local club woman, both dedicated their lives and careers to the philanthropies of the Progressive Era. The lecture will discuss the distinction between life in urban and rural areas of Appalachia and connect these two women’s stories to broader themes defining the region at the turn of the century.
The special speaking event will be at Blount Mansion Visitors Center. Limited free parking is available onsite. A $10 donation is suggested at the door; cash and cards accepted. RSVP to [email protected].
