The EventCheck Knox calendar is being updated to reflect events that are being canceled or postponed because of concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19).
Rather than remove the events, we opted to leave them on the calendar so people wondering if the event is on or off can quickly check the calendar. We also will re-list any postponed event as soon as a new date is determined.
To keep the calendar updated, planners should email me at [email protected] about any cancellations and postponements. You also can use the Submit Event link to send any updates if that is easier on your end.
Events in March that have been canceled include Shamrock Fest, Big Ears Festival and the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon. Postponed events include the Knoxville Chamber’s Spring Schmoozapalooza and the Clarence Brown Theatre’s Subscriber Season Sneak Peek brunch.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and local health care officials have recommended social distancing in an attempt to limit the spread of COVID-19, which is spread by human-to-human contact in the same manner as the flu. However, unlike the flu, there is no vaccine, and no one has built immunity to COVID-19.
“The overall safety of the community is driving these decisions,” said Lauren Miller, senior vice president of Moxley Carmichael and an experienced event planner. “Gatherings of groups of people in confined and shared spaces is not recommended when the spread of disease is a concern. Also, it is important not to overload the health care system because that is part of the frontlines of stopping a pandemic.”
For complete information about COVID-19, visit the CDC’s website and the Knox County Health Department’s website.
The postponements and cancellations are disruptive in the short term but benefit everyone – from planners to attendees to workers – in the long term. We always tell planners to look before you book! In this case, attendees need to look before they go. Please help us keep the calendar updated!
Maria Cornelius, a writer/editor for Moxley Carmichael, populates the EventCheck Knox calendar. Because of COVID-19, March now means no NCAA Tournament basketball, so she has even more time to update the calendar.
